Head of Centex South Florida works to create communities people love to live in

Matt Horan, Centex Homes Division President for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Matt Horan, Centex Homes new Division President for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, loves Florida and loves the new opportunity he has to create communities here that will stand the test of time. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he grew up in Palm Beach County, attended public schools there, and received a law degree from the University of Florida. Now, after serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy during Operation Desert Shield, and practicing in Orlando, he oversees Centex Homes operations in South Florida.

“I’m proud to be working on this team. Centex is a national corporation entrenched in doing what is right locally. We work hard to understand what people in each area want,” Matt said. “The communities we build are consistently excellent for the families who move in.”

Right now Centex, under the name of Tech Village Partners, is in the process of creating Exploration Pointe, a live-work-play-learn community that will be built on over 4,700 acres of land in North Palm Beach County. “The design for Exploration Pointe incorporates a lot of the principles that have been identified over the past 10-15 years about what makes a community special. We are using that knowledge and including the best practices in our community plan,” Matt explained.

Having grown up in Palm Beach County and witness the largely unplanned development and growth that shaped his hometown, Matt sees new opportunity here. Unlike in Miami-Dade and Broward, there is still enough space on which to create special places. He tries to put himself in the place of a potential homebuyer. “When we sit down as a team to go over a land plan or footprint of a home, I personally like to close my eyes and imagine that I’m driving or walking down a street to see what it feels like. How would I feel walking my dog, going for a run, or going out to dinner? I envision a beautiful street with well-designed homes containing functional space that works for a variety of residents.”

For this local boy, whose heart is in his community, preserving the environment is an important priority. More than 2,000 acres of stressed, former agricultural land at Exploration Pointe will be restored and preserved forever. “ I don’t think a lot of people realize how much land is being preserved without having to float a bond to purchase it at market rate. It’s almost like going out and dedicating a national or state park,” Matt adds. “It’s a fantastic feeling to know that much property will stay preserved and that wildlife corridors will be created which will allow them to move freely to the other preserved areas nearby.”

Matt, who serves on the Board of Directors for the Gold Coast Builders Association, stresses that he and Centex are here for the long run, committed to building communities that will leave a legacy. “I feel a tremendous responsibility in doing something of this scale, making sure it remains a special place so my kids and grand kids can see it and be proud.”
