The Florida House and Senate Approve $9.5 Million for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for Continued Research

Commitment from the state will play important role in pursuit of NCI designation

MIAMI, Fl. - The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will receive nearly $10 million for continued cancer research as a result of the 2010 Legislative Session. The additional funding from the state will allow Sylvester to recruit additional researchers who have expertise in specific areas of cancer as well as their research teams. As the only academic-based cancer center in South Florida, the impact on patient access to more pioneering therapies will be substantial.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New research conducted by the scientific director for VGTI Florida and his colleagues at the University of Montreal, in collaboration with scientists from the NIH and the McGill University Hospital center, may soon lead to an expansion of the drug arsenal used to fight HIV. The research sheds new light on how HIV gradually weakens the body's immune system and highlights the need for new research into therapies that will target the chain of events that cause the progression of the disease.

Tallahassee - Aiming to "right size the class size amendment," Sen. Don Gaetz (R-Niceville) and Rep. Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel), today announced their proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution to update the 2002 class size amendment. Governor Charlie Crist expressed his support for the proposed amendment.
